Why Leaving Religion Out Of Politics Backfired in the long run

  Punishments in response to witch-hunts and heresy were the norm in the Middle Ages (especially during the Inquistion, when Christians conquered Spain and areas surrounding it). After the resistance successfully fought back against the tyranny of the Christian theocracy, the people thought it would be a good idea to leave religion out of political and legal affairs. In its early stages, this worked out as intended throughout the late 17 th Century and early 18 th Century. One would think this is a net positive, but the Jews and their Abrahamic offshoots observed this choice from the shadows and capitalized on it; no more witch hunts, no more public torture (and any other kind of punishment, for that matter) in response to heresy, and no more forced conversions to Christianity.  Publicly at least...
